MY JOURNEY WITH ADULT ACNE, WHEN TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP?

MY JOURNEY WITH ADULT ACNE, WHEN TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP?

Adult acne is real! An absolute nightmare for anyone dealing with it! Thinking you’ve escaped, with an acne free youth then out of nowhere persistent adult acne breakouts!? Discomforting! Online we find hundreds of articles (here’s another!) With Potential triggers, causes & aggravating ingredients… I must’ve spent a fortune on products targeting adult acne over the years! Sigh!

CAUSES, HAVE YOU STOPPED TAKING THE PILL?

In my case, the adult acne may have been triggered by hormonal changes when stopping oral contraceptives (birth pills). I swapped to low oestrogen (Note; Higher hormone levels of Progestin in the pill may sometimes trigger acne)?

RE-EVALUATE YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS UNTIL THE ACNE BACTERIA HAS DIED!

Some of my trusted & most effective products at the time only made things worse! Not because of bad or ‘trigger’ ingredients. More so, they contain very ‘active’ ingredients that almost fed the bacteria that needed slaying!

I’ve stripped my skincare routine down to the basics! Avoiding too many steps & even products targeted for sensitive or acne prone skin! I found they didn’t help much. The best thing I can now do is double cleanse & exfoliate. Former acne breakout routine post here….

HAVE YOU TRIED SEEKING PROFESSIONAL HELP FOR ADULT ACNE? VISITED THE GP, OR DERMATOLOGIST?

After a couple of years of eliminating foods like gluten, wheat & dairy from the diet with no real improvement. Also trying so many products & methods that yes helped the overall texture of my skin, but the breakouts still persisted!

After all of this! I realised I needed help! With skin we never know if sudden breakouts are indicating something more serious underlying? I’ve met people whose adult acne was directly related to poly cystic ovary syndrome! If you’re doing everything right & nothing’s working? It never hurts to go & get it checked out.

HAVE THE PRESCRIPTIONS HELPED FIGHT THE ADULT ACNE?

The first time, I was given Benzyl Peroxide; A topical ointment for acne & possibly the most common prescription given! It worked for a brief time only by reducing some inflammation but overall did nothing to kill off the acne bacteria & dried my skin out a lot!

ERYTHROMYCIN WITH ZINC ACETATE, SOUNDS SERIOUS!

Round two! This time another topical antibiotic solution: ERYTHROMYCIN WITH ZINC ACETATE. A treatment for ACNE VULGARIS containing 5% Zinc Oxide, a powder until the pharmacist mixes it into a liquid solution to be applied topically AM/PM to clean skin using the applicator top of the bottle.

Three weeks in, I can already see improvements however, this treatment is very sting & especially drying! Spots & skin texture less angry, smoother & less bumpy. Make up sits better now too! One thing I’m not loving is how red the spots are turning! Flatter but red which I think could just be part the healing process?

Seven weeks in, much better! Still there’s a few smaller patches mainly around that time of the month being the trigger. But overall, the treatment is really helping, I can see visible healing which is incredible! My experience with this treatment whether it lasts or not is positive, it is working – Hoorah!

CAN YOU USE OTHER SKIN CARE PRODUCTS AT THE SAME TIME?

Anything you like! But, the solution must fully dry before doing so (takes a little time) I only use a very light hydration & SPF. Should I need an extra boost i’ll use a moisturiser but, it’s dependant on how my skin feels. I’ve been getting along well with three products whilst using this acne treatment that are together generating positive results.Adult Acne

SIMPLE SKINCARE ROUTINE WHILST USING ACNE TREATMENT?

NEOGEN – BIO PEEL (K-BEAUTY)

The mother of all exfoliation products! Check out my breakdown here…

SKINFOOD – ROYAL HONEY PROPOLIS (K-BEAUTY)

Hydrating Essence; 63% Propolis extract, 10% Royal Jelly & Antioxidants. This is so gentle ANTI-BACTERIAL & ANTI-INFLAMMATORY being perfect for acne prone skin.  I love how these ingredients don’t feed the Acne giving my skin a much-needed, but light hydration.

A’PIEU PURE BLOCK NATURAL DAILY SUN CREAM SPF 45 PA +++(K-BEAUTY)

My best SPF so far! Light, hydrating with no white cast or  pore blocking feeling!! Also excellent value for money!  More detailed post hereAdult AcneNEUTROGENA VISIBLY CLEAR LIGHT THERAPY TARGET SPOT TREATMENT

Intrigued by the concept & having heard amazing things about laser facials! This pen produces Red & Blue UV light. The Blue light kills the acne bacteria whilst the Red reduces inflammation. Each session lasts 2 mins & perhaps as a combination of the prescribed acne treatment but, i notice that when using this pen on aggressive acne areas, I can very much see how how the inflammation reduces & doesn’t spread.  Being battery operated means easy & inexpensive to re-use unlike the full-face mask alternative.

Further post update; since writing this post i’ve been trying to limit foods like gluten, wheat, sugar and generally anything processed. Which can be hard when living in a city surrounded by it! So, these culprits creep in sometimes however, from doing this strictly I can see how these foods impact the skin as my overall skin texture and glow looks much healthier than when consuming the above, not to mention how good I feel inside! What we eat I believe does play a huge part to our overall appearance yet, an effective, friendly ingredient type of skincare routine is also super important
