Anyone guilty of a recent Beauty splurge? About three months ago when looking for products that would complement a topical acne treatment prescribed by my GP (very drying). I was looking for simple products, lightly hydrating (non-comedogenic) that wouldn’t clog my pores or feed the acne bacteria!
Deciding to commit to the task I chose to stay clear of all my usual skincare products! Focusing only on slaying the acne! Full post here…. I’d been eyeing this product by South Korean brand Skinfood… For key ingredient ‘Propolis’ Have you seen this trending recently? I had & it sounded perfect in its light & gentle essence form so I committed to it!
SKINFOOD > ROYAL HONEY PROPOLIS ENRICHED ESSENCE
SIZE: 50 ML
WHAT IS AN ESSENCE?
In K-Beauty this type of lightweight, hydrating layer is known as an essence & for those unfamiliar with this term it’s like a combination between a serum & hydrating toner. Very light weight, gel or watery in consistency yet super hydrating & can be layered under heavier products like a serum or cream depending on your skin type.
With practically no smell at all, super easy to use & dispense thanks to the pippet & glass bottle that it comes in. Also 10 points on the hygienic scale! Whoop! As in, no dirty fingers or bits are getting in there! What made me splurge was the 63% propolis exact & 10% Royal Jelly content contained in this product which in my mind is amazing!
What is Propolis?
It’s the Red or Brown resinous substance collected from honey bees & tree buds! Honey has been used for centuries and known for its antimicrobial properties. But, did you know propolis in its pure state has over ‘’300 natural compounds including amino acids and many others’’ ?
Packed with antioxidants, anti-bacterial (perfect for acne) And not forgetting, anti-inflammatory too! Promotes healthier skin with the addition of fermented yeast (yet not enough to break me out!) & Lactobacillus to help even out the complexion.
WAS IT WORTH THE BEAUTY SPURGE?
Absolutely! Just a small amount of product is enough to cover my whole face, absorbing quickly leaving no sticky residues. In terms of hydration; this is perfect for my oily acne prone skin being lightly hydrating & almost gel like in texture (clear coloured). I find that it doesn’t clog the pores at all in fact with this product alone & Sun protection cream by day I find is all I need.
From using for three months or more now my skin looks smooth, hydrated & Glowy yet not oily! I appreciate how the formula doesn’t feed my acne & notice how my red spot marks are fading in a gentle way.
Whilst on the topical acne medication, my skin was a lot drier yet still prone to oil and shine! Now the treatments finished this product still seems to work extremely well with my fluctuating skin type!
BEAUTY SPLURGE > PRODUCT TWO! TIME FOR A LITTLE EXFOLIATING!
Back to the exfoliation, I just can’t express enough how much this step has & continues to smooth my complexion by removing the dead skin which effectively helps the skin clear & heal faster. I tend to prefer chemical exfoliation opposed to the grains (if unsure as to what that means exactly you can read all about it here…). But, this time I wanted to try something different which leads me to…
TONY MOLY APPLETOX SMOOTH MASSAGE PEELING CREAM
SIZE 80 ML
COST: From £8-£15.00 (depending on where purchased from
Eliminates dead skin cells to help clear congested skin
Enhanced with Active fruit Acids
Grainy texture as is ‘peels’ dead skin from the face
Enriched with Keratin, green apple extracts, papaya, and fresh fruits
WAS THIS WORTH THE SPLURGE?
I purchased from eBay for about £8.00, for this price yes! The packaging is cute but, ’m not a fan of these screw tops! Reason being, I can’t shake the notion that every time I open it air gets inside & the active ingredients lose a bit of their potency? Perhaps I’m wrong?
Texture wise it’s creamy with grains to exfoliate the skin, it smells of an apple fragrance & you can use it a couple of times per week. I leave it on for 30 seconds or so, emulsify with warm water working it around the face then rinse. You can leave it on for longer depending on what works best for your skin type.
As for exfoliation; my skin does feels smooth & despite the grains I find it very gentle & non abrasive on the skin, & leaves my face fresh looking however in terms of ‘peeling’ for me the results are not exceptional & I’m not sure if this leaves a slight residue on my skin! Perhaps from being regular user of the Neogen Bio peel pads, nothing else really truly the cloth.
The ingredients include mineral oil & Cetyl Alcohol which are known as acne triggers, yet for a short wash on & off scenario the risk factor is quite low (ingredients listed from first to last indicates how high the content is in the product by their positioning first being most potent etc.) This product hasn’t broken me out but, I think there are parabens in the ingredients list which is a bit of a red flag. I’m happy for the experiment, moving forwards I doubt I’ll repurchase.
BEAUTY SPLURGE NO. 3 – [TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL] ART CLASS BY RODIN SHADING
SIZE: 9.5 G
COST; £13-£25 (Depending on where you buy)
WHAT IS IT & HOW DOES IT WORK
Here we have a subtle contouring shading palette with three different tones, one beigey for highlighting & two darker colours for defining, blush or contouring.
The consistency of this powder is just dreamy & creamy! Literally gliding on the skin, not sinking in to fine lines. I love every shade however for my skin tone, it’s just a little bit too light for contouring yet perfect for subtle & natural definition.
The colours work well with my warm complexion & are gently pigmented however if you prefer a stronger look, for darker toned skins this may not be enough for you. The lightest shade very subtly lifts my complexion & I apply just above my cheekbones, inner of my eyes & under the eye area as it brightens up my face gently but really well.
Being a beauty blogger isn’t cost-effective! We splurge on many products, sometimes only for curiosity! Always with an eye open for an effective skin care or cosmetic product the Propolis essence by skin food is my top pick from this splurge & one that I’d highly recommend & repurchase. What about you? What’s your biggest skin concern right now? And, have you tried any new and exciting products recently?
