Are you in to clay masking? I think, at some point most people have tried clay masks right? Does anyone not want a smooth, even & glowing complexion? As you may know? From developing adult acne in my thirties!! It led me to use my face as an experimentation canvas! Unfortunately, most of those ‘experiments’ did NOT work out so well, most of the time, kinda made things worse! But one type of mask that has stuck within my routine, has to be the good old clay masks.
BENEFITS OF CLAY MASKS
Mud masking’s been around since way back! Ancient Egyptians, even Cleopatra is said to have regularly used deep-sea mud mask treatments to maintain her smooth & radiant complexion! There are benefits from ANY good quality ingredient type of face mask when incorporated into a skin-care routine but, what I love about clay especially is that it doesn’t require me to sit still after application, it’s not wet like a sheet mask & I love how they can be used to treat so many different skin concerns
Let’s take a quick look at some of the benefits
Deeply draws out impurities, controls excess oil & grease
Exfoliation, shedding dead skin cells
Targeted Treatments; Acne, Redness, Eczema, Hydration boosting etc.
A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLAY
Ever spotted ingredients Bentonite & Kaolin in your clay masks before? Bentonite is known for its absorbing & skin tightening capabilities. These can be helpful too at clearing surface acne by helping the skin rid impurities by drawing them out. (look for Grey or Cream in colour).
Kaolin clay however, is available in an assortment of colours from White, Yellow, Pink, even Red! Yet, each with distinctive properties from Exfoliation to circulation boosting & Brightening etc.
TIP & TRICK
Clay masks don’t need to dry 100%! In fact, DON’T let your clay dry completely into your skin! Reason being is due to the way clay dries is within three steps; From Damp to drying & then dry! Basically, just before a mask completely dries in be sure to wash it off. Why? To prevent too much moisture being drawn which is clay’s strength but if left on for too long it could be detrimental! Causing dehydration, even irritation should your skin be more sensitive so don’t do it!
CLAY MASKS AS A TARGETED OR SPOT TREATMENTS
Did you know that (unless preferred) it’s not always necessary to apply clay masks all over the face? Especially, for sensitive, dry or even combination skin types you may prefer to use clay as a targeted treatment, focusing on troublesome areas only. I love doing this for evenings after work where I can see my skin looks like in need of a little extra love but where time is limited.
Skincare, as with maintaining a healthy lifestyle both require a bit of commitment, clay for me wins on the easy factor! Sadly, we don’t always have time for pampering? I enjoy mud masks in the week because they literally stick on and stays put! Allowing the freedom to get on with other tasks if needed (perhaps killing the whole relaxation aspect but hey, sometimes life happens!).
HAVE YOU TRIED THESE CLAY MASKS?
Here’s the clay I’m loving right now! As both products have been working surprisingly well with my skin, I like how each provide immediate freshness but, in different ways. Being acne prone I’ve learned to go easy with the skin experiments and appreciate how both these products seem to calm my skins appearance after use. For a couple of days my overall complexion appears brighter, calmer, tighter & overall a bit more balanced looking & feeling which for me is awesome!
Any treatment works best when used on a regular basis (1-2 times per week is good) From doing so, it seems easier to maintain a clear, smooth and even complexion. You know what they say ”Beautiful skin requires commitment, not a miracle’ ’ I don’t know who came up with that but so true

This mask treatment is a pot of loose clay powder activated by water
To make it up Mix 1* Tablespoon of powder, with 1* Tablespoon water or until you get a good paste & apply with a brush or back of a spoon.
I find this mask dries in quite quickly but it gives a good indicator as the colour changes to an almost white pink and it’s really easy to remove as it almost feels like powder falling from the face!
I don’t notice any scent really which for me is always good, maybe I’m wounded from past mistakes but I don’t trust any product that smells to heavily of fragrance so this wins on that count too – Yay!
In my opinion this clay mask is competitively priced against similar on the market,I like the way my skin looks and feels when using this. The only drawback being the need to mix ourselves yet, this has its plus points as perhaps a bit more hygienic?
Here’s another great clay I’ve been using and originally picked up at Holland & Barrett. It’s a grey coloured mask & much thicker in consistency than above which allows it to spread easily & is very easy to use. I do notice a fragrance with this one yet, not in a perfumed sense more so it’s a bit earthy & overall this feels super gentle yet slightly tingles upon contact with the skin.

Deep Cleansing & Smoothing For a Fresh Appearance
With a brush, fingers or the back of a teaspoon apply a generous layer, or as desired. This mask requires 10-15 mins to penetrate the skin, when it feels mostly dry before feeling too tight, wash with warm water & use a washcloth. The clay will change colour from a dark grey to light so you can see when the time is nearing to wash it off! Every time I use this I feel like when I remove it, I reveal a smooth & calm appearance.
These are just two clay masks, there’s heaps to choose from out there! Do you have any go to products? I’ve been reading about PETER THOMAS ROTH Pumpkin Enzyme Mask (not clay) But, sounds amazing but I’ve not tried it, if you have I’d love to hear your thoughts
